We are recruiting for a State Director of Risk Management to join our Risk Management and Compliance Team.
This is a work from home position on the west coast.  California Residence is Required.  
With a focus on high risk state(s), this position investigates potential claims, works with patients, residents and families and delivers education and training on liability claims related issues with the goal of improving quality of care and reducing future liability exposures to the organization.
Essential Tasks:
  • Independently assesses facility specific risk management needs for Hospital and Health Services divisions of Kindred Healthcare.
  • Develops and coordinates education and training for facility and district level employees on risk management related issues.
  • Coordinates monthly conferences with field administration to review risk management trends including but not limited to professional liability claims, event trends, ADR results and operations risk.
  • Under direction of counsel, conducts on-site investigations of recent adverse events with a high claim potential.
  • Acts as the “first responder” to facility, district, and regional operators on questions relating to risk management issues.
  • Directs facility response to potential risk management issues.
  • Reports potential claims to liability claims department.
  • Maintains logs of educational and intervention activity and reports monthly through confidential data base.
  • Participates in regional performance improvement activations with Health Services and Hospital Divisions.  Participates in HSD District PI on an as-needed basis.
  • Intervenes with family and residents to resolve concerns regarding risk management issues to prevent professional liability claims.
  • Strong clinical and/or operations background, preferably in long-term care.
  • Knowledge of state regulations
  • Effective facilitation and communication skills to deal with personnel and families on sensitive issues.

  • Approximate percent of time required to travel: 50%


  • Bachelor's Degree in healthcare related field, nursing preferred.
  • Juris Doctor preferred.
  • CPHRM, RN or LPN preferred but not required.
  • 2+ years relevant experience in nursing or risk management and liability claims.
  • Approximate percent of time required to travel is 50%.
Depending on candidate’s qualifications, this position may be filled at a different level.
