Nurse Manager - Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit - Methodist Hospital of Southern CAArcadia, California
Responsible for the overall direction and supervision of patient care activities and nursing personnel of a nursing unit. Consults with staff, physicians, and Program Director on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Ensures nursing staff follows policy and procedures, participates in the investigation and preparation of reports. Ensures adequate staffing for nursing units. Has authority and responsibility for implementing the Standards of Nursing Practice related to all nursing care areas and functions. Acts as the administrative representative in the absence of the Program Director.
Responsible for the direction of the unit’s nursing staff.
Assesses staff competency of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
Ensures change of shift is conducted appropriately and staff is informed regarding conditions of patients, follow up actions requirements and any special conditions.
Ensures staff is competent to adequately assess and reassess pain, can utilize appropriate pain management techniques and educates the patient and family regarding pain management, ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate the overall plan daily for effectiveness.
Ensures staff is competent to perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.Informs Program Director, Risk Management and Administration of circumstances, which may have a serious impact.
Coordinates and directs staff to ensure patients’ needs are met and hospital policy is followed.Develops and prepares staffing schedules based on patient acuity and daily census.
Assesses and formulates teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning to ensure staff is competent.
Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, and administrative team.Demonstrates ability to assist staff and physicians with procedures.Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formulation of the plan of care.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
Ensures staff is competent to manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
Ensures staff responds to call lights to meet patients needs.
Performs management activities, such as interviewing, hiring, counseling, termination, and assessment of staff clinical competency.Annually or as appropriate, appraises performance and assesses competence of staff.
Conducts monthly department staff meetings.
Coordinates with PT to maintain performance improvement CQI and quality control activities for department.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. Additional state requirements as applicable. Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may substitute for education requirements.
- Registered Nurse in the State.
- BCLS and ACLS Certification.
- CRRN preferred.
- Minimum three years’ experience in all aspects of medical surgical nursing.
- 1 year of Acute Rehabilitation experience is required.
- Minimum two years’ supervisory experience required.
